Energy efficient ICT

Electronics and photonics form the technological basis of our modern information society. Optical communication and data transfer are key enablers for the Internet. Magnetic and electronic storage have allowed people to store huge amounts of data both locally or remotely 'in the cloud'. Computer systems and chips consume huge amounts of electrical energy and they exchange and process ever increasing levels of data at increasing energy-densities and information-densities, to the point that computer chip designers call the 'power wall'.

In order to meet the ever increasing demand for computing power, access to stored data and fast data connections a radical new technology solution is urgently needed. The integration of photonic, magnetic and electronic components into novel hybrid systems could be a way to meet the pressing demands. To accomplish this, new materials, new growth and characterisation techniques, novel fabrication processes and innovative device concepts have to be developed.
